Relatives and Friends
Sylvia Ivy Claydon was born on the 14th April 1900. (the elder daughter of Adolph "Otto" and Lena Wenck at Coolana, Mt Tarampa near Minden. She grew up on the family farm which involved crops and dairy cattle.
She started school at nearby Minden School in 1906 riding her horse to school. Her only sibling, her sister Myrtle started school in 1916 and later became a teacher at Minden.
Although she tried a stint at nursing in Ipswich at one stage, Sylvia mainly stayed at home to help her parents as many girls did in those days.
She married George Claydon in 1934 and moved to Rosewood, where her only child Bevan was born. George Claydon was involved in mining and sawmilling work. After her father's death in 1941 the farm was sold and Sylvia had her mother to live with her until she died in 1971. Sylvia continued to live in Dinmore until going into Bundaleer Lodge in August 1995, where she peacefully passed away on 23rd May.
Sylvia always loved music, dancing and horse riding. She played the piano for many years, with her father and sister had two pieces of sheet music published. (Both Foxtrots.) She was also a good cook. A specialty was her Ginger Blowaway Sponge. A keen gardener (a real green thumb) loving roses and growing her own supply of vegetables.
Her only grandchild Dean was born in 1970. He became the highlight of her life. She taught him to sing Daisy Daisy when he was 12 months old, and later to play the mouth organ.
Approximately 10 years ago her daughter-in-law Norma became involved with her care, doing her laundry, housework and meals, until she went into care. Norma continued to be involved with her care in Bundaleer visiting her frequently and taking her on outings. A highlight being Christmas lunch at Parliament House with Premier Beattie and the 100+ club.
The biggest highlight of her life was reaching 100 years. Bundaleer gave her a big party where Mr Jack Phaff presented her with letters of congratulations from the Queen, Governor-General William Dean, Prime Minister John Howard, Qld Premier Peter Beattie, and other members of Parliament. On that day she became a member of the 100+ club.
Later that year she was presented with a millennium medal from Peter Beattie.
Sylvia remembered sighting Halley's Comer twice. First in 1910 when she was 10 years old and again in 1986 at the age of 86.
A very long and close relationship developed between my parents and their family and later my family with the Claydons when they came to live in Dinmore. This relationship still exists today.
We still keep in contact with Norma and Bevan who is Secretary of the Dinmore Soccer Club.
Our families always addressed Sylvia as Mrs Claydon. Mrs Claydon had that touch of class. She was real ladylike and could speak so well on any subject. She was very pleasant and easy to get on with. We will all miss her.

Claydon-Wenck.
A pretty but quiet wedding was solemnised at Tallegalla Methodist Church, by Rev. T. J. Graham Wilson, on Saturday, October 20, the parties being W. George Claydon, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Claydon, Rosewood, and Sylvia, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Wenck, Coolana. The bride, who entered the church on the arm of her father, who gave her away, was gracefully attired in a white crepe-de-Chine frock, made on long classical lines, the bodice being prettily pin-tucked, with hand-made faggotted yoke, and two shoulder capes over long, tight- fitting sleeves. Her wreath was worn cap fashion and was composed of orange blossoms, pearls, and silver tulle, from which her veil hung in long graceful folds. She also carried a beautiful sheaf of Arum lilies, with long trail of fern, tied with tulle and satin streamers. As the bride left the church little Elva Yarrow presented her with a horse shoe, the work of Miss G. Brooks, She was attended by Miss Dolly Claydon as bridesmaid, who wore a powder blue glory crepe frock, ankle length, with two frills on the skirt and bodice, with hat to match. She also carried a lovely sheaf of pink gladioli and fern and wore a string of crystal beads, the gift of the bridegroom.
Mr. H. Claydon, brother of the bridegroom, attended as best man.
The bride's gift to the bridegroom was a wallet, and the bridegroom's gift to the bride was a pin-grained handbag. The best man received a set of sleeve links and studs.
The wedding breakfast was held at the residence of Mrs. W. Claydon, Rosewood, and the party on arrival was received by Mrs. W. Claydon. The room was nicely arranged with ferns and flowers and a beautiful two-tiered wedding cake adorned the bride's table, the cake being the work of the bridesmaid.
Rev. Graham Wilson occupied the chair and the usual toasts were honoured.
After the wedding breakfast Mr. and Mrs. G. Claydon left on a motoring tour to Burleigh Heads and parts of New South Wales, the bride travelling in a saxe blue crepe cotele, with mastic pleatings of georgette with mastic hat to tone. The bride's frocks were the work of the Grace Saloon, Ipswich, and the bridal bouquets were the work of Mrs. C. Rose, Gladstone. Mr. and Mrs. G. Claydon are to live at Rosewood. [7]
