NECK BROKEN.
FALL FROM HAY STACK.
Rosewood Farmer's Death.
Falling from a 10ft, haystack at Rosewood yesterday, John Phillip Freeman (68), a well-known farmer in the district, broke his neck. The death took place under tragic circumstances this morning of Mr. John Philip Freeman, of Perry's Knob, a well-known and highly respected resident. Having had breakfast, Mr. Freeman left his home about 8.30 a.m., for the hayshed, to get hay out for the stock on his farm. About half-an-hour later, his son-in-law, Mr. Owen B. Yeoman, on bringing the waggon along to the haystack, noticed Mr. Freeman lying on the ground, and thought he was perhaps "sunning" himself among the hay; but he discovered that Mr. Freeman was dead, and head injuries were apparent. He called to a neighbour, who stayed with the body while Mr. Yeoman, advised Mrs. Freeman and Mrs. Yeoman (daughter), who were at the house. Dr. Wallace was immediately summoned. Life was extinct, death probably having been instantaneous.
It was evident that Mr. Freeman had climbed the high stack of hay, on the top of which were some sheets of iron, which he purposed removing in order to begin using the hay; and that he had lost his footing, and fallen to the ground, striking his head first. His neck was fractured, and he had other facial injuries.
The late Mr. Freeman, who was 68 years of age, underwent an operation in Brisbane last year, but had regained his health. He was a well-known figure in the show ring, where for many years he held the position of ribbon Steward. He served in that capacity at the recent Rosewood Show. He was a member of the Rosewood Rifle Club, and always took a keen interest in the sport.
He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. C. Freeman, of Tallegalla and in addition to his farming pursuits at Rosewood, he had spent part of his time at Manly, where he had a home.
Mesdames Alf. Embrey, David Elder, Cecil Hobbs, and B. Yeoman, of Rosewood, are daughters of the late Mr. Freeman, and sons are Messrs. Cyril (Murgon), Charles (Beechmont), and Percy (Beechmont). In addition to his widow and family, he leaves six sisters, Mesdames C. Sollett (Marburg), W. Holland (Wacol), Symonds (New Zealand), Coleman (Dinmore), E. Dutney (Rosewood), and Yarrow (Gayndah). There are also three brothers, Messrs. James and Moses (Tallegalla), and Fred. (Maleny). His eldest brother, Mr. C. W. Freeman, died 11 months ago.
The flag at the Farmers' Hall was flown half-mast upon receipt of news of his death. The funeral will take place from Mr. Freeman's late residence to the Tallegalla Cemetery on Sunday.
