Aberdeen Journal |
DEATH OF MR ALEXANDER COLSTON – This well-known gentleman died at his residence, Bieldside, on Monday last, in his sixty-ninth year. Mr Colston came to Aberdeen about 1830, having been appointed precentor of the West Church – an office which he held till 1855, discharging his duties faithfully and acceptably. During his incumbency, he had in the choir, at various times, not a few of the gentlemen who afterwards became precentors in the city and neighbourhood, and who have since taken an active interest in the promotion of psalmorly amongst us. By these gentlemen, as indeed by all his old pupils, deceased was much respected, for he had a kind heart and an obliging nature. Mr Colston was a native of Edinburgh, where he held a situation similar to that he came to fill here. He had, say thirty years ago, a tenor voice of great range and power, and having received lessons in his early days from Mr John Wilson, who became the famous exponent of our Scottish songs, knew how to use it with effect. Mr Colston was for many years teacher of music in Gordon's Hospital, and indeed taught in some of our educational institutions till within a fortnight past.

1875 ABERDEEN REMINISCENCES, WEST CHURCH PSALMODY
Alexander Colston, the buirdly retired precentor of the West Parish Kirk, was no more seen : he departed in his seventy-second year. He came from Leith, possessed a full baritone voice, was a mason, and had been a pupil of John Wilson, the first of Scottish vocalists. The new precentor could sing a capital song, and was popular at public dinners, but did not perplex himself about psalmody : its time was not yet. He taught the "Sillerton loons" music, and they led him a sad life. Several of them sang in the West Kirk choir when I was a member of the body -- 1843. I once got into disrespect with Colston through a silly bit of pencil work. The choir observed that our Benedict leader was much attracted by a bonny young servant-maid who attended the church, and they wickedly were the cause of putting the following lines from A Lay of the Laterom into our precentor's mouth. The name of the fair one (I knew her well) was Helen Ord.
Aye in the kirk I think on her
When weel my choir doth chord ;
For a' that's sweet in harmonie
Combines in Helen Ord.
And if the line within the psalm
By chance should end wi' " Lord,*'
I grip the L atween my teeth.
And only murmur -- " Ord ".
Colston was an honest, a good-hearted man, to whom fortune was not over-kind, and I had the opportunity of being of some service to him as the end drew near. What a fine manly appearance he had when leading the psalmody from the lateran.
[Definition of buirdly:
adjective: muscular and heavily built
Example: "`buirdly' is a Scottish term"]
