From Jody Bell:
Rosetta McLeese was married to a James Morgan Kelley so therefore her surname changed to Kelley due to marriage. We're not sure what happened to James Kelley, ie divorce, separation, death. The lines of information we have on this couple were they were married in Townsville and living in Rosetta's aunt's boarding house on Melton Hill. The aunt sold that boarding house and purchased another in Rockhampton. The next information finds Rosetta living in her aunt's boarding house in Rockhampton with no James Kelley. Rosetta never changed her surname back. Rosetta met an Alfred Smith. Alfred asked Rosetta to marry him but she declined. They had 2 children who took on her surname which was Kelley at the time. When Rosetta was on her death bed she asked Alf to marry her (perhaps to secure some kind of inheritance or security for the children) but he declined this time as he saw no point to it. The sad thing was that my grandfather [Clive Kelley] never knew the truth and spent his whole life angry at Alf thinking he didn't want to make an "honourable woman" of his mother. The opposite was the case! | Family: F1760

The reason for marrying in the registry office and not a church was probably because of disagreement with the type of Lutheran Church locally. To be married or buried in church required membership of the congregation. Some of Otto's siblings also married at the registry office. Non-membership of a church congregation would be the same reason the Wenck burial plot was established on the Wenck farm. | Family: F41
